World Photography Day!

8/21/2026

World Photography Day is celebrated every year on August 19, but its roots go all the way back to the birth of practical photography in 1839.
The date commemorates the daguerreotype, one of the first successful photographic processes. It was developed by French artist and inventor Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, building on work he had done with Nicéphore Niépce, an important pioneer who had produced one of the earliest surviving photographs years earlier.
On January 7, 1839, the French Academy of Sciences announced Daguerre's process publicly. Then, on August 19, 1839, the French government presented the daguerreotype process to the world. Rather than keeping it as a tightly controlled private invention, France made the process broadly available—an event often described as photography being offered as a "gift to the world." That August 19 date eventually became the basis for World Photography Day.
The Texas Photogaphy Festival celebrated World Photography Day in Georgetown, Texas on Aug 19,2026. Led by Amy Jasek one of The Texas Photography Festival committee members.
